Do I need to register my business?

If you are doing business within the U.S. at least, yes, you will probably want to register your business name so that you’re able to open a business bank account.

This is done with your state. The process is simple, but the exact steps depend on your particular state and which tax structure you've chosen. Here’s some more information from the IRS website: Starting a Business.

We have two action plans that could help you out:

The first is Set Up Shop, which runs through the basics of the legal and financial side of starting a business.

Second, the Small Business Legal 101 action plan specifically covers these 4 legal basics from a U.S. standpoint:

1) Choose your tax structure

Decide whether you want to be recognized as a sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corp, or C-corp.

2) Register your business

This is done with your state. The process is simple, but the exact steps depend on your particular state and which tax structure you've chosen.

3) Create legal policies for your website

Most online businesses should have a "Terms of Service" and "Privacy Policy." You may also need to make some "Disclosures" about any results you're promising to your customers.

4) Create contracts

If you work with clients or contractors, you'll need written contracts to clarify the terms each party is agreeing to.
